I was very fortunate to be able to begin a copy of an Edgar Payne painting yesterday. I will go back and finish it in the next few days.

It was such a thrill to not only spend a little time with this painting observing it but also being able to block in a crude copy of it. I have done numerous copies over the years of painters I have admired such as Sargent, Sorolla, Wendt, and Fechin to name a few.

http://www.kendewaard.com/Copies.htm

There is much to be learned by doing this. Sometimes the lessons present themselves while doing the copy other times it comes later while working through some difficulty in my own piece.

It is a helpful to better understand how the artist actually did his work. I often think back to Sargent's copy of a Velasquez painting where it was done in Sargent's style however Sargent was not trying to go stroke for stroke to match the Velasquez painting, just getting the essence of it.

The Payne painting I am working on has not yet been cleaned so I am remembering back to the Payne Show I saw last year in California, where the colors were more vibrant and not so muted. Also trying to do it in my hand and learn a little something while I am at it.

After doing many copies over the years as stated earlier all of which were done from books or enlarged prints, this is the first copy I was able to do from the original. After having it around the studio for the last couple of days, I have caught myself noticing it out of the corner of my eye, and it really feels as if there is a connection, be it small, to Edgar Payne himself, definitely feels different seeing it was done from the actual painting Payne did versus a book reproduction, very nice feeling actually.

It has taken me many years, over 23 to be exact of doing plein air, to realize the importance of that. As much as I pull from the scene I do not want to be a slave to it, always looking to simplify and enhance the overall of what first grabbed me.

I began this business many years ago doing watercolors under Irving Shaprio at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and in my heart of hearts still proceed in my work somewhat like that of a watercolorist.

Be it the changing light which is always a challenge but with that is also a blessing due to the shapes and designs that it continually creates. Or as in this case having a figure that appears and casually walks into your scene.

I usually try not to chase the light after realizing that first "light - shadow" pattern that I was first drawn to but again always being open and receptive to any improvements and possibilities that may arise, again part of the charm of plein air versus using a photo that is stagnant.

I have been lugging this paint box around the county for the last six years or so.

Sadly I did not take it to China or Italy but everywhere else in between. A dear friend, an old cowboy Artist by the name of Jerry Riness helped me build it.

Each place it has gone I usually try and get it tagged so to speak. Every Plein Air event always stamps the back side of the canvas with their logo as well as the date. So naturally I would have them stamp the front of my paint box, like one of those old traveling suitcases.

Tim Bell one year at Easton decided it was necessary to write, " Honor is a gift that a man gives himself" on a piece of blue tape attached to my stretcher bars. That too ended up on the top side of this old box.

And now of course it has spread to the inside of the box, even have a Edgar Payne print under the 12x16 panel.
I have toyed with the idea of making a slightly smaller box, better for traveling with, but not sure I could part with this one anyway, it has kind of grown on me over the years.Ken DeWaardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15556352042031678772noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569724100893015688.post-58712207530239862342014-07-28T06:09:00.002-07:002014-07-28T06:09:13.802-07:00What's in a name? Air Jordan and PAEMy love of b ball started at about 4th grade for me. Played all through high school and into college.

Seeing that I am from Chicago it is no surprise that I am a huge Michael Jordan fan. My wife even danced with him back at the Cotton Club years ago, and believe it or not I was not even jealous. Actually I must admit I was jealous, but more because she got to meet Jordan and I did not. Ya I know pathetic.

In any case, I have 4 young children all of whom I adore and continually try to inspire to rise up to every occasion in life, so naturally we reference Jordan a lot.

My youngest son Westen is somewhat fanatical about b ball as was I. Before leaving for Easton he gave me a little Air Jordan logo that he cut out and framed up in a white border. Told me to keep it in my pocket for good luck and inspiration. So I did.

As the week went on I carried this little logo with me, more to keep him present in my mind than Jordan, but whatever.

During the event I decided to do a nocturne of the Bartlett Pear Inn from the backside of the restaurant of the wait staff working in the kitchen. The glow from the inside windows against the dark patterns and rocking chairs was what caught my attention. Great shapes and temperature drives.

Soon after starting an 18 x 24 one of the wait staff came out to see what I was doing. He was very kind and introduced himself as the owner and head chef and said his name was "Jordan".

As we began to close in on the deadline of selecting our 2 competition paintings it turned out that this nocturne would be one of my selections. As much as composing and painting a piece may seem to be the most difficult part of it, for me it is probably more difficult to come up with a good title than it is to paint it.

Knowing the connection to this Air Jordan card my son gave me and that the chef's name being Jordan I wanted to use something that would carry over. As I ran over some of Jordan's favorite quotes in my head and asked my kids if they had any ideas, my roommate Greg LaRock said, "How about Pear Jordan?"
"Perfect!"

"Pear Jordan" 18 x 24 oil on linen - Sold

The locals seemed to get it, even if some others didn't know what to make of it.

As it turns out the painting won 3rd Place! I was thrilled and very surprised. Thanks Peter Trippi!

So the little Air Jordan logo made its way back to the mid west were it is has now been given a new home - inside of my paint box. Just a constant reminder to always give 100 %.

I love the fact that Jordan is quoted as saying that he never lost a game, just ran out of time. Here are a few of his quotes:

I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.

I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.

I play to win, whether during practice or a real game. And I will not let anything get in the way of me and my competitive enthusiasm to win.

If you accept the expectations of others, especially negative ones, then you never will change the outcome.

I never looked at the consequences of missing a big shot… when you think about the consequences you always think of a negative result.

If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I’ve had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

I’ve always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come.

My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength.

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

The older two are now keeping busy with their lives, work, friends, and growing up I guess but I was able to include my boys in a workshop I gave here recently.

They both are incredibly talented and possess a great deal of enthusiasm for the arts.

They grow up so damn fast!

It is only a 3 hour drive however it has been hard for me to get over there especially during their Plein Air event.
I was delighted to be invited back to give a short one day class and hang out for a couple of days.

Thanks to Nicki, Sue, and all of the others behind the scenes as well as Sandy and Chuck for making this happen. Shared a wonderful meal with a host of talented and interesting people the night before.

We had beautiful weather for the class which is always iffy in June. So naturally I was very grateful for that. Here are a couple of pictures of the demo.
Not sure what it was that drew me to this painting but I truly loved it. It was a different style almost even primitive compared to what I was being trained in at the Palette and Chisel at the time.

It just so happened that this particular painting was used on the promotional card for the opening so I was able to bring a copy of it home with me besides the one I already locked away in my head.
I lived with this post card for a few weeks before I decided to make a copy of it.
I am sure I still have the promo card somewhere buried in my studio but not sure where, along with a few other things I have been looking for as well.

I have attached an image below of the copy I did back in 1992.

The reason I am bringing this up is while I was down in Apalachicola this past May for "The Forgotten Coat Plein Air Event" that little image crept back into my head.

This was my fifth year there and I have a few spots I have come to really enjoy. One of them is Apalach of course the other one is East Point. Carrabelle is charming and there are some fine things in Port St Joe, the splendor of the Cape, and some wonderful colors up in Mexico Beach as well but the sunrises in East Point get me every year. I am not one to repaint a scene because of sales but I am one to repaint a scene that enamors me every time I see it.
This year every morning I started off with a sunrise in East Point, one of three spots all in a line, right next to one another.

This strip of land I am referring to is comprised of some old Oyster shanties that have been out of business now for a few years, except for Lynn's, thankfully.
From the waterway they take on one view but from the street side they take on something totally different. I have driven by them probably hundreds of times in the past 5 years.
I have even eye balled them and shot numerous photos with the intent of painting them from both sides.
This is where sale-ability can creep into your mind and send you driving further down the road looking for a "prettier" scene.
Well this year my dear friend Greg LaRock just so happened to paint those shacks from the roadside in the late afternoon, in my mind the "not so pretty" side.

This painting sold so there goes my insight on what is truly sale-able or not. Never had that anyway.

In any case after seeing Greg's painting and admiring what he did I decided it was time to paint those shacks. In my head as I told him, was this painting I have been carrying around with me for the past 22 years.
Now granted it is not the same scene however this I believe is similar to what Monet` was referring to when he said an artist should carry a painting in their mind before painting it. I did not have a 12x24 which would have been more fitting for this composition but my quest to paint it would not subside so I did it on a 12x16.

The wonderful play of shadows and shapes in this line of shanties with a palm at the end is what was engraved in my head. So being old maybe my minds eye isn't as quite as refined as I would have liked and remembered but the big picture is there.

Knowing that I did not have enough frames and was not intending on submitting this to the show, I did not bother to finish it. I will, now that it is back in the studio, adjust a few things and call it a day.
I am sure Mr Shannon's painting will creep into my mind yet again when the right scene presents itself.
As an artist it is amazing how much inspiration and past experiences we carry with us and draw from and continually utilize at all times.

The kicker for me was when I got back to my studio and actually dug up this old copy. It was buried and I wasn't even sure I still had it. When I finally found it I turned it over to check the name of the artist which I had forgotten, I was amazed and delighted at what I found.

Who back in 1992 would have ever thought I would be painting down in Apalachicola of all places, The Forgotten Coast!
I titled my painting - "East Point" figured it was fitting.

My son Westen who is in the class, was a very good sport in letting me pose him to give the kids a quick idea of what I actually do in producing a painting.

We didn't have much time but we made the most of it.

I blocked in a quick head of West then asked if any of the kids would like to come up and try it. Naturally all of them raised their hands!

Again given the little time we had, we attempted to get a few kids up. I wasn't sure how they would respond to this and the first two children were actually a little more conservative when painting, just covering over something I had already stated.

So naturally reflecting back to my P & C days when if I was not happy with a head study I had been working on for 3 hours I would add a few self insulting touches as a reminder to myself to do better next time. So . . . I made the comment that Westy is actually a big fan of Rudolph. I then proceeded to dab a nice red blob on his nose. That's all it took and we were off to the races.

Mustache, little devil horns, fumanchu beard, nothing like pushing their creative license. What a riot that was!

I realize this is a no-brainer and yet I am usually amused at what I learn day to day.

Recently I had a collector call about a painting. They inquired if it had texture or bold brush stokes, which is hard to tell on line.

I gave this some thought and remember back to the first time I saw an original Scott Christensen painting. I had seen his work in print but never an original. I assumed they were very painterly. So the first time I saw an original I was amazed at how they were very fresh, lush, and flowing and yet the paint application was held to a minimum, not thickly painted at all. I was a tad bit surprised.
This did not diminish my admiration for his work what so ever but it was a surprise.

As I look through my Russian books and marvel at their application of bold confidently painted paint I began to question my own work.

I have always admired an artist that is able to apply a stroke thick or thin as long as it was confidently placed and not mushed around. So many years of reading and admiring in person Sargent's work and his use of transparent backgrounds definitely creeps into my mind while working, and believe me I know it is always better to have a balance of both thin and thick paint.

While working on this Italian scene I was fascinated by the variances in the stairs be it color, value, and temperature and as much as I could have painted them thickly I was amazed at how they came together and stayed seated when the paint was kept thin. This allowed the linen to give them a sense of reflected light and natural qualities that I feel would have been lost with a thicker application of paint as well as the reflection of that thicker paint. Even within the light passages, the old adage of going heavy and impasto for your lights has fallen short in my eyes.
I really enjoy how much the canvas will reflect the light when it is kept thin.

With that said, I will continue to push on thicker paint when it is necessary but also appreciate the thinner passages without too much contemplation.

It may all still stem back to my watercolor days and yet maybe it is just my way of seeing the world.Ken DeWaardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15556352042031678772noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5569724100893015688.post-73245885030666023342014-02-28T14:55:00.001-08:002014-02-28T14:55:46.962-08:00What is it about GRAYS?I have read numerous times about the importance of grays.

I understand what they do and why they do it, however I am often fascinated at the power they have over me.

I am not a tonal painter and yet I would not consider myself a colorist by any stretch even though I love color.
However I am truly fascinated by grays. The subtleties, the variety, and their ability to bring everything together.
I have been on this Italian kick lately and again cannot say how much I have really enjoyed the grays of Italy.

Just a couple that were finished up this week.
I am planning a trip back this year and have been very excited about that and have even been revisiting some favorite places. Loving the grayed color of old Italy, something I noticed in China as well. As much as I love color and I do, I really love those wonderful grays, they just continue to fascinate me!

My kids always seem to ask me what my favorite color is and I always reply the same way, gray. There are so many variances within the grays.

Recently I spent a few days with a dear friend who happens to be an avid collector of Aldrich. George Ames Aldrich that is, an American painter from the late 1800s until about 1940. Did amazing things with water and its many reflections and translucency. It is always nice to be able to see the originals up close and observe how he actually did it. Spent about an hour with my nose on one that just amazes me to no end, a looser sketchier piece than his usual work but absolutely magical.

Here are a couple images below thanks to Janus Galleries in Madison WI.

Again after spending the last month or so exploring Italia I came across this Venetian scene that has been hanging around my studio and waiting to be painted, patiently.

As much as I was looking for a water scene in which to explore Aldrich, this scene fell short on that but the calming gentle reflections and patterns excited the hell out of me. Aldrich did many scenes in Brittany with the waterway and the towns women washing their laundry along the waters edge, somewhat reminiscent of Venice.

I intended to do this painting more abstractly by the nature and play of shapes but ended up with that Aldrich painting still hanging around my head which seems to have pushed me into a little more of a finished feel.

Still a few tweaks to go but a fun piece to paint.

I definitely need to get back to Venezia as well!

I began this Fine Art biz many years ago in watercolor, under the guidance of Irving Shapiro back at the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

After spending two months on a commission piece for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester I have finally been able to get back at some pieces that have been rolling around in my mind. With much anticipated delight I have started five 18 x 24's and one 12 x 24. Visiting some old scenes as well as creating a couple of new ones. As I mass in each one I begin to see how much I still hold to my watercolor roots.

I loved the fact that Shapiro always started with his darkest dark on pure white paper, which if you know anything about watercolors, that is not the usual procedure. But by doing so Irving was able to keep his darks - rich, transparent, and saturated. When done in the usual manner the darks are reserved until much later in the process and end up being painted on top of previous layers so in essences taking away from the fresh rich and transparent beauty of the dark.

So now fast forward to oils many years later and I still find myself massing and washing in my patterns and shapes as close to the value and temperature that I want them to be when the painting is complete. With the white of the canvas my darks stay rich and transparent and even my lights with the added help of the white linen can stay transparent versus impasto, which again adds to their brilliance and ability to reflect the light versus absorbing it.

I teach a small class here in my studio weekly and I hear myself repeat these things over and over, one of the really good parts about teaching for sure. It does add clarity to what I am trying to do and achieve as I continue to evolve and grow.

You may ask why this thought now on this morning? As I look at one of the Italian scenes in progress I see that I still have the white of the canvas showing through on a part of it that is the highest and closest to white in reality. I rarely ever use pure white on a painting, there is always some influence of either warm or cool infused into it.
However this morning I am tempted to leave it be as one would in Watercolor.

Recently while working on a commission for the Mayo Clinic, I have been taking little breaks and doing a couple of 10" x 8"'s in preparation for a still life class I will host in Madison this coming January. It also helps to keep my work fresh by doing these small pieces, when I am forced to work in doors.

I have always enjoyed painting this piano with all of it's deep rich color, the temperature variances, as well as the wonderful shapes and designs it presents.

Under the north light in my studio the wonderful cool notes that hit on the edges are just fascinating to me. That and the bright high notes of the peonies with the rich blue vase really gets my goat.

Surely I will be exploring this a few more times.

Something I have been doing for a while but never really put my finger on it, knowingly that is.

I may have even heard it somewhere before and had it locked away deep in my head, but in any case, it came to me.

A simple statement yet a big idea.

Isolate your light and shadow patterns but do not isolate your colors.

Easy, no?

I have attached an image without Bryan's Mark Taylor's consent, hopefully he is cool with this.
I believe it is a good example of what exactly I am referring to.

On a closer look we can see that within this shadow, we still have all of our values correctly stated, staying where they should and yet an array of colors are being used, no loss of what is in light versus what is in the shadow area here what so ever.

Jill Carver, forgive me as well, I did not ask permission to use this, but again, great painter, great example of keeping a clear definition of our lights and shadow patterns. No confusion here.

Not sure why it took me so long to be aware of what I was already doing but grateful to have a little clarity in my life. : )

Whenever I am in that area I always make a trip over to visit the Irvine Museum, great place! Thanks to Jean Stern and the rest of the gang there.
As expected they had a few pieces I had not yet seen in person.

One in particular is a beautiful subtle view of Crystal Cove by William Wendt. I have been on a constant push to control my use of my darks for many years now. I know they are very important but I usually try and refrain from leaning on them too much, so when I saw this painting by Wendt I was naturally floored.

He pulled it off with so much control and no heavy darks what so ever. He didn't seem to go beyond a 70% dark in his darkest of darks. Everything was saturated so it was not a high key painting in any sense of the word, which would enable him to do that. But as I said he kept his values in such control and captured that early morning light which is usually void of any real darks anyway, due to the softness of the light.

My bad was carrying this painting around in my head for the remainder of the event.

I was fascinated by the early morning light as it began to hit the top side of Crystal Cove, so I began a 24x30 and tried slavishly to capture what I had seen.

At the time again still always trying to avoid any real darks I pushed on. I thought I had somewhat accomplished what I was after. Spent a few days chasing it and trying to preserve that quality of light in the overall scene. I decided it was finished and submitted it to the show. I was very happy to receive an award for it from the Randy Higbee Gallery, which somewhat validated my decision to submit it.

I have found that since returning to my studio that the painting did indeed need some of those added touches of darker notes, still not heavy darks but definitely pushed a bit.

I have since gone back into the painting and feel it is in a much better place now.
Still have a great deal of respect for Mr. Wendt and will continue trying to acquire the ability to do what he was able to do with that ever elusive morning light.

In all honesty I hate to even post this next to Wendt's piece.
You should!Barbara is a wonderful gal that lives in Charleston SC with her husband Fred and their frisky pooch Charlie.

Barbara posts a fun and enlightening daily blog.

http://barbarastroud.wordpress.com/author/bstroud1/

She and her husband are huge supporters of the arts and are very involved in the art scene in Charleston, which I might add is a very vibrant one at that.

While I was in GA I buzzed over to pay them a visit and wish Fred a Happy Birthday.
We had a wonderful couple of days before I had to head back to the cold frigid weather of Wisconsin.
We wined and dined and bounced around the galleries as well as hit Bowens for some great seafood.

Barbara carries her camera about as much as I do if not more, which according to Tim Bell, is just nuts! But in any case I did manage to snap a few pix of the gal behind the blog, doin' her thang.
